Chapter 23

We might have figured out that my seizures were triggered by using a great deal of magic, or a rush of adrenaline. Though how they played out was unpredictable. The length, or how long I’d black out, seemed random. This time, I was agonizingly aware of all of it.

I screamed as pain tore through my chest, as if fire seared me straight to the bone. My muscles were tense and rigid no matter how I tried to force them to relax.

Biting down on my screams only made things worse. As if the magic sensed my attempts to fight off my punishment, it cruelly doubled down against my efforts.

When Tizmet batted Luther aside, Jamlin stepped away, giving her space. She dropped her bulk and wrapped around me and Rafe, tucking me away from the world, hiding me in my moment of vulnerability. She crooned and spread her wing overhead, sheltering us from the sun. I shook, fighting against every shudder, making it worse. My shoulders jerked so hard that my neck snapped back. My teeth sank into my tongue, drawing blood. Tears blurred my vision as liquid fire boiled in my veins. I was vaguely aware of Rafe pushing something in my mouth and rolling me onto my side.

Compared to when I healed Blain, this seizure didn’t last long—though to me it felt like an eternity. Bones aching, and muscles spent, I wearily worked my jaw, releasing the leather belt Rafe had slipped between my teeth.

“You with me?”

I would have smiled at the reassurance his rough voice gave me, but it hurt too much to move.

‘Foolish,’ Tizmet spat.

‘I had no other choice.’

She kept her tail crushed against us, pressing us into her side. She pulled her wing back and nuzzled me. ‘He would not be a great loss,’ she huffed, unimpressed.

I winced as she jostled me and rasped out a response to Rafe’s question. “Aye. At least it wasn’t as long as last time.”

“Tell your dragon to let me up.” His anger was a simmering, tangible thing as he shifted against me.

“Don’t kill him,” I said, voice weak.

Rafe grunted, the sound resonating with frustration and indifference. My words meant nothing to him.

Tizmet’s neck cast us in shadow as she peered over her back, presumably watching Rothfuss and his men with Luther. ‘Can I eat him now?’

‘You cannot eat Luther.’ Pressure built and throbbed behind my eyes, and I clamped them shut. “Luther has to live. If he dies, someone worse could take his place,” I said aloud for Rafe’s benefit.

‘Then I will eat them as well,’ Tizmet assured me happily. Problem solved.

“Then I’ll dispose of them, too,” Rafe grumbled.

I groaned as he echoed Tizmet’s sentiment. “You two! Let Rothfuss handle it. That’s his job!” I winced again as the force of my words caused the lingering pain in my chest to flare. ‘The people of Leeds cannot see you as a man-eater.’

‘Why should I care what tiny humans think of me? I am a dragon.’

‘He’s not your kill. Don’t eat him.
